53rd APACPH – Pre-Conference Workshop: Getting Your Paper Published

This workshop is organized by the Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health (APJPH) in conjunction with the 53rd Asia Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH) Conference. The workshop is held as a response to meet individual and institution’s needs to enhance research and acquire specific knowledge and skills to write and publish scientific manuscripts. This workshop targets public health students, researchers and academic staff who conduct research and need to develop successful scientific writing skills. The topics covered will be relevant to public health professionals who would like to write about their work and to postgraduate students who want to learn the basics of writing an academic paper for publication in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health or equivalent. The workshop hopes to boost participant’s self-confidence to
initiate and sustain their scientific writing efforts.

About the Speakers

Emeritus Professor Dr. Colin Binns

MBBS (UWA), MPH (Harvard), PhD (Inje), FRACGP, FAFOEM, FAFPHM

Prof Binns is the John Curtin Distinguished Professor of Public Health, School of Public Health, Curtin University. Having worked in Papua New Guinea for 8 years (from 1969 – 1977), Prof Binns joined Curtin University in 1977 and became Foundation Head of the School of Public Health, a
the position that he held for 21 years. This included a period as the Foundation Director of the National Drug Research Centre. Prof Binns serves on 20 committees of the National Health and Medical Research Council, including Chair of the Dietary Guidelines and Infant Nutrition committees for several decades. His work has included the Australian Dietary Guidelines and Infant Feeding Guidelines and similar work in our region. Prof Binns is the Editor of several public health and nutrition journals, including the Asia Pacific Journal of Public Health (APJPH), the official journal of APACPH, which he has been serving for 15 years now. His utmost dedication and expertise have improved the quality of papers being published in APJPH and brought the journal to where it is now, and most importantly, helped our authors to improve their papers significantly. Prof Binns has an impressive list of publications, including 600 papers, books, and chapters, on infant nutrition, health promotion, public health and related areas with an h-index of 60 and an i-10index of 273. He has received numerous Honours; including the Research Australia Lifetime Achievement Award (for translation of science into public policy), Senior Australian of the Year (WA), an honorary PhD (Inje University, for nutrition research in Asia) and many other academic awards.

Prof. Dr. Wah Yun LOW

PhD, AFBPsS, FBSCH, CPsychol., FASc

Prof Low is the Editor-in-Chief of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health (APJPH) and the Immediate Past President of APACPH. Currently, she is
an Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Malaya, Malaysia. She graduated with a BA (Hons) from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and subsequently obtained her MSc and PhD from the University of Surrey, Guildford, England. Professor Low is actively engaged in teaching, research, service, and consultancy. She has published more than 25 books and book chapters and over 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals, particularly in the areas of behavioural science, sexual and reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, men’s health, and ageing. She serves on several editorial boards of journals, and member of many learned societies. Prof Low is the co-author of the book “Writing and Publishing a Public Health Research Paper”, published by the University of Malaya Press, Kuala Lumpur.
